Unlocking the Power of Dry Brushing
Whether you’re new to dry brushing or it’s already a part of your skincare routine, this age-old self-care practice has multiple benefits if practiced correctly. In this Moonlight blog, we'll explore the art of dry brushing, including why it is practiced, the proper techniques for maximum benefit, and other health benefits.
Get the Most Out of Dry Brushing
If possible, dry brush before showering and in the morning to maximize these benefits:
Exfoliation: Dry brushing before showering helps remove dead skin cells, revealing smoother and softer skin.
Stimulation of circulation: Brushing the skin in a specific manner enhances blood circulation, promoting overall skin health.
Lymphatic drainage: This practice aids in stimulating the lymphatic system, which assists in detoxification by removing toxins from the body.
These techniques will help you dry brush safely and get the most out of the process:
Choose the right brush: Opt for a natural bristle brush with a long handle for easy reach. Bristles can range from very soft to firm, so it’s best to test them first and select one that doesn’t leave marks or scratches on your skin.
Start from the feet: Begin brushing at the feet, using long, sweeping motions towards the heart. When you’re finished with your lower body, move to the upper body, starting with the hands and arms and moving toward the lymph nodes in the armpit. The diagram below is a great guide.
Use gentle pressure: Apply gentle pressure to avoid skin irritation while still stimulating circulation.
Brush in sections: Work your way up the body, brushing each section methodically a few times. You might find it easier to use small, circular strokes when brushing areas of your body, like the hips and buttocks.
Focus on sensitive areas: Be extra gentle when brushing sensitive areas like the chest and abdomen. Avoid tender areas like your nipples and genitals, as well as areas with any acne, sores, skin irritations, or open wounds. Consult your doctor if you have any questions.
Other benefits of dry brushing:
Reduced Cellulite: While not a miracle cure, dry brushing may help reduce the appearance of cellulite by stimulating circulation and breaking down fat deposits. We think it’s important to point out, however, that cellulite is completely normal. The majority of women develop cellulite in one or more areas around the hips, buttocks, or thighs after puberty.
Stress Relief: Dry brushing’s rhythmic motion can be calming and stress-relieving, making it an excellent addition to your self-care routine.
In our next Moonlight blog, we’ll discuss how to care for your dry brush and offer suggestions for the best skincare products to complete the process.
