Five Ways Anyone Can Celebrate Father's Day

As a former board member of a nonprofit that provided support to grieving children and teens who lost a parent or a sibling, we worked with kids who lost their dads, single parents who took on multiple roles, and mentors who stepped in to be parental figures. I understand that days like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day mean something different to everyone. Father’s Day can be a day of remembrance, a day to celebrate a father-figure, or a day to take time to yourself.

Five Ways to Celebrate the Day

No matter your situation this Father’s Day, I encourage you to stay as present as best as possible. Try not to get overwhelmed by the commercialization of it all, and say thanks to a role model - past or present - who made a positive difference in your life.

1. Go for a walk

Whether on your own, with your dad, or a male mentor, treat yourself to a walk. There’s something special about being outside this time of year (and I don’t mean allergies!). Not only are there physical benefits to walking, but it’s an easy way to take alone time if you need it or share time with someone who has meant a lot to you.

2. Work on a project

Perhaps your dad or guardian needs help with something - lend a hand. You can spend time together and get something checked off the ‘to-do’ list. This is also a great way to stay busy if this day is trying for you.

3. Cook a favorite meal

Even if you don’t fancy yourself a great chef, that’s okay! Eating is always a good idea. Pick a fav recipe or try something new (and easy if need be!) and have fun with it. Maybe you cook it on your own and serve it to your father figure or you cook something together. Either way, do whatever you think most will enjoy and serve it up.

4. Memorialize your father

If your father or father figure passed away, consider honoring his memory by donating to a charity in his name or volunteering on his behalf. Buy or make a Father’s Day Card and write him a note of gratitude and keep it in a special place.

5. Have a friend over

It’s always a great idea to surround yourself with great company. Father’s Day is no different. If you celebrate this day with your dad or male guardian/mentor, consider inviting over his dear friend(s) for some fun. If you celebrate this day on your own, invite your friend over and find comfort in togetherness. Do a fun activity, watch a movie, go outside, grab some great food, etc.

Most importantly, do whatever you can to be kind to yourself and celebrate male role models past, present, and future. - Mona
