The Importance of Body Movement and Easy Ways to Stay Active
Some of us shy away from exercise because it seems mentally and physically daunting, but it doesn’t need to involve burpees, 45-minutes of jumping jacks, or any routine called “Death by 200 Meters.”
There are simple activities we can incorporate into our everyday routines to keep our bodies active.
Body movement plays a key role in preventing disease, increasing our mood and energy levels, and maintaining good physical health.
Consider incorporating any of these simple activities into your daily routine for better health:
Walking
Walking is a low-impact exercise that can be done anywhere and requires no equipment. Consider audiobooks, podcasts, or catching up with an old friend to help pass the time! Aim for at least 30 minutes a day.
Stretching
Don’t wait for the 7th inning to touch those toes. Stretching can help to improve flexibility, reduce stiffness, and relieve tension in the body. Take a few minutes periodically throughout the day to stretch your muscles. YouTube videos are great if you need stretching suggestions for particular muscles that feel sore or tight.
Dancing
No need for formal tap shoes or ballet slippers. Just start dancing! Dancing is a fun and enjoyable way to get moving. Dance at home, go out with others, or sign up and take a class.
Gardening
If weather permits, break out the hand trowel. Gardening involves bending, reaching, and lifting, which helps improve strength and flexibility. It’s also a great reason to get outside and connect with nature.
Cleaning
Two birds, one stone. Cleaning and body movement. Cleaning is a great way to get moving and burn calories. Activities like vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping all require physical exertion.
Yoga
Yoga is a great way to improve flexibility, strength, and overall well-being. It helps with balance, and it can help reduce pain and stiffness in the body. Yoga is There are many beginner-friendly yoga classes and videos available for free online.
Not bad, right? You probably do many of these activities without realizing it. Try to make them a regular part of your schedule and you’ll be on your way to better health. (It is recommended that adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week.)
